EXTRAORDINARY SOLAR ECLIPSE APRIL 2024, CANADA MEXICO AND  NORTH AMERICA

Monday April 8, 2024, North America, Canada and Mexico will be treated to a total solar eclipse, also known as the Great North American Eclipse! This is the first total solar eclipse to be visible in Canada since 1979, Mexico since 1991, and the United States since 2017. The path of totality, where the Moon completely blocks the Sun, will stretch from Mexico through parts of the United States and Canada.

Solar eclipse

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. Sometimes the Moon only blocks part of the Sun’s light. Solar eclipse can be : total solar eclipses, annular eclipses ,partial solar eclipses.

What is gonna happen is a total solar eclipse in that path, the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s light for a few minutes. The earth will be so dark that it looks like night time during a full Moon!  This will offer a broader corridor of darkness that will stretch from Mexico to Canada. If you're lucky enough to be in the path of totality, you can expect to see the sky darken dramatically and experience a brief period of twilight during the day.  Be sure to use special solar eclipse glasses to view the eclipse safely, as looking directly at the Sun can damage your eyes.

There are between two and five solar eclipses every year, each visible only in a limited area according to NASA. The last solar eclipse occurred in North America taking a duration of 00:2: 42sec, which gives the total solar eclipse of 2024 a unique feature to be the first total solar eclipse to extend duration of 4 minutes and 28 second, 2 minutes ahead of total solar eclipse of Aug 21, 2017. The 2024 path will be significantly wider, ranging from 108 to 122 miles, compared to the 62 to 71 miles in 2017, allowing a larger area of North America to experience the full eclipse. The moon will be very close to the earth, and the earth will be dark approximately for  00:4:28sec.

Eclipses are not just rare astronomical events; they are also opportunities for scientific discovery. The sun will fight to function as usual on its path but there is no means due to the moon's closer proximity to Earth, making it appear larger and thus covering the sun for a more extended period. Scientists who study the Sun’s atmosphere, called the corona will utilize the opportunity to observe the sun since the total darkness can also be kind of cool for them

However, The 2024 total solar eclipse will spark public engagement. Educational events and live streams will teach viewers about science. Citizen science projects will use  people's photos to study the sun. Social media will be abuzz with eclipse experiences. Partnerships will ensure everyone has access to information and safe viewing methods.
